The Miller's Run Preschool offers a program for twenty four three and four year olds in the school district serving the towns of Wheelock and Sheffield. The pre-school program offers many experiences that support the healthy growth and development of young children in all areas, socially, cognitively, and physically. This provides an opportunity for children to gain many of the skills important for kindergarten success. Registration for the preschool begins in the Spring, and continues until the program is full. Interested families should contact the school at 626 9755. In addition, for the 2008-09 school year we are able to offer preschool to six children from other towns in the supervisory union.  For additional information about this opportunity go to http://web.mac.com/michellebkantor/Preschool/Welcome.html Interested families must apply through the CNSU Early Childhood Program.

The Curriculum:

The environment and curriculum are designed to support the needs of the children through integrated themeatic units with activities that are based on the interests of children and the group. This approach naturally affords a curriculum that reflects the culture of families as well as the community.

The preschool goals and objectives are guided by the Work Sampling System, https://ags.pearsonassessments.com/group.asp?nGroupInfoID=worksampl. the Vermont Early Learning Standards, http://education.vermont.gov/new/pdfdoc/pgm_earlyed/pubs_vels_03.pdf and the Vermont Framework of Stands and Grade Expectations. For example, a science standard states that "
Children begin to use scientific tools and methods to learn
about their world, including design and technology." If our investigation is learning about frogs, children might draw their observations of tadpoles, or make a project depicting the life cycle of a frog.

Observing tadpoles

We routinely document this learning through photo albums or bulletin board displays.  This documentation shows us children's growth overtime and shares our learning with families and the community.

Our Philosophy:

Miller's Run Preschool offers a safe, healthy, nurturing and stimulating program that affords an opportunity to engage in culturally relevant, meaningful learning opportunities that scaffold a child’s learning and allows the child to feel safe.  Part of creating a climate of respect and trust is acknowledging that children learn at different rates, and may have different abilities or special needs, thus opportunities are provided that allow children to be successful at their developmental level while exploring these “next steps”.  Miller's Run preschool supports the youngest learners in our community in partnership with families fostering the enjoyment of learning, celebrating diversity, and respecting all learners.  Families are always welcome to spend time in the preschool, and encouraged to attend the special family opportunities offered throughout the year.
