With the primary focus on academic readiness, the Kindergarten program scaffolds with the pre-kindergarten programs that are offered at Miller's Run School.
At the Kindergarten level, the focus is on early literacy and early mathematical skills as well as science inquiry. Early literacy knowledge is assessed using the Kindergarten Observation Assessment with the goal of meeting or exceeding the Vermont Standards. The Investigations Program is used in k-2 to teach early numeracy. The children learn and practice math skills as they progress through the Investigations' units. Early numeracy understanding is assessed using the CNSU Local Assessment.
Direct instruction and the use of the Work Board, a way of circulating through learning centers, combine to encourage student independence.
School-wide consistency in teaching practices at Miller's Run School through
teacher professional development, enhances student learning.
