Fifth grade

This class is working with fractions and percents. They have been doing some problem-solving almost daily using fractions and percents. Often times, they are asked to compare amounts, such as "Is 5/8ths of one pizza more or less than 2/3rds of another pizza?"

Sixth grade

The sixth grade has been working on multipication of fractions and mixed numbers. They have two methods for multiplying mixed numbers--the distributive method (which is a great introduction to an important concept in algebra) and the improper fraction method (which is often a little less work!).

Soon we will move to dividing fractions.

Seventh/eighth grades

The class has been working on proportional reasoning for the last marking period. These topics include everything from problem solving with rates and unit price to percent problems (taxes, interest rates, discounts, etc.) They are now working on converting measurements within the English and metric systems. Next they will convert between systems using given conversion factors.

As a highlight to 7th and 8th grade math, the students will next design, draw to scale, and build bridges out of wooden craft sticks. Lyndon Institute will host a bridge design competition in mid-March. Prizes include most weight held, workmanship, most spectacular failure, and best resistance factor. An overall best bridge is also chosen. Our students have done very well in this competition over the last few years. Please check back in to see some of their designs.

In social studies,

the sixth and seventh grades are studying the middle ages. Currently they are working on producing photostories on the legends of King Arthur. Check back here to see some of their completed projects!
