School Wide Literacy & Reading
Recovery

"Psst..."
The fall literacy assessments have been completed in the primary grades and the teachers are already geared up for another year of fun and learning in literacy. The children are excited, too, to be discovering new things about reading and writing.

The Reading Recovery program is up and running with six children enrolled from the first grade. The objective of Reading Recovery lessons is to promote accelerated learning so that students catch up to their peers, close the achievement gap as quickly as possible, and continue to learn independently. Each Reading Recovery teacher teaches four children one on one on a daily basis for 30 minutes over a 12 to 20 week period. Every lesson includes lots of reading and writing and is tailored to the needs of the individual child. The teacher teaches and demonstrates problem-solving strategies and provides just enough support to help the child develop effective strategies. We are very lucky this year to, once again, receive additional support from Susan Lynaugh, our consortium Teacher Leader, who lends her expertise to the primary staff as well as teaching two children of her own. The children are eager to come and learn all they can about reading and writing.
